Go On A Safari
Excellent!
Apple has released a beta of Safari, a KHTML-based browser. I love Chimera, and think I'll miss tabbed browsing, but here are some highlights:
- Really, really fast.
- Smarter than Chimera about popup blocking: I can use the CMS from work without having to turn off popup blocking now.
- Integrates bookmarks (which are very easy to manage) with the address book, so if an address entry has a URL, it's presented with the name on the entry... handy for looking up friends' sites
- Integrated Google bar
- "so far so good" on CSS
Oh... it's a Cocoa app, so those beloved Emacs keybindings work in every text editing field.
LinuxToday has the technical details on the use of KHTML, etc. Mark Pilgrim has a rundown of where CSS is working (and not) in Safari.
Update: O.k. I found a CSS bug. The handy little 'bug' icon in the upper right let me send the page, the page's source, and a brief report of the problem to Apple.
Yet Another Update: Alas and alack, it doesn't seem to like bookmarklets, which means no handy Movable Type "postit" buttons. Too bad. Once NetNewsWire has category support, it won't be such a big deal. For now, though, back to Chimera.

There was a reason I didn't use Konqi on Linux.
FWIW, I tried it and couldn't even use Active PHP Bookmarks with it. It didn't pick up the damn cookie.

Hell yeah.. fast to launch, fast to load, no pop ups, imported my bookmarks automagically... small sized toolbar. The one bitch i have is that Safari just decided to make itself the default browser without asking. Then again I dont really mind since it is workign well.
The main thing i like about it is that it will autocomplete in the addressbook from my bookmarks.

Yeah... it's got some issues with cookies and PHP... the people over at MacMerc are picking at its problems. It's just not quite soup yet, but it's a pretty impressive beta. An app to follow, anyhow.
