how about latest release IE for mac? that's, uh, 5.2? safe enough for the interim? [although terminally annoying...]

No need to hop all the way back to IE . . . Camino is quite good and ostensibly as secure as Mozilla, upon which it is based. Depending on your hardware, for that matter, Mozilla isn't a bad choice. My 500MHz iBook doesn't handle it as smoothly as some other choices, but it works.
