GNUS + RSS = Chocolate and Peanut Butter

Ed's casting about for a decent RSS aggregator for Mac OS 9 and reporting that Amphetadesk isn't bad. Snappy reports GNUS does RSS, but I've got no idea what the state of Emacs on OS 9 is.

Just trying to help make a connection here.

I think I'm at the "giving up on OS 9" stage again. Saddens me but them's the breaks.

Amphetadesk basically worked but while it was downloading feeds, Perl locked up the computer. It apparently does not play nice at all with OS 9's cooperative multitasking. It let me back in when it was done but it takes like 5 minutes to download all my feeds.

I don't think I can live with that.

BTW, I had tried to figure out how to use GNUS' RSS backend on my OS X emacs install, before I began the whole OS 9 quest, but I could find no clear instructions anywhere on the web, which is par for the fucking course for GNUS.

"It's so cool we don't have to explain it to anyone. Suck it up" seems to be the GNUS motto.

All too common among designers of unusual and powerful systems, who use the systems themselves.

if you've got gnus configured for other stuff (mail or news) then using rss is quite easy.

what you need is to add a new group with the nnrss back end

in the group buffer (the one you get after starting gnus), hit G-m
you will be prompted for a group name
when asked about a method enter "nnrss"

now your new group is created, when you enter the group you will be prompted for a url give the url of the rss feed and it should connect to it and grab articles.

you may prefer this method for adding feeds http://groups.google.com/groups?dq=&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&group=gnu.emacs.sources&selm=87bs6mn0k9.fsf%40everybody.org

cheers,
Alaa
